Join current LAB artist Laurie Oxenford (Public Palace) for a Concrete [Anthropic] Rock Recovery Tour on Wadawurrung Country. Venture through the urban landscape and “unspaces” of central Geelong to seek, interact with and collect Anthropic [Concrete] Rocks.

Concrete [anthropic] rocks occur across the liminal spaces (or “unspaces”) which occur between architecture and infrastructure. In the same way that “dust bunnies” collect beside, behind and around functional active spaces, concrete rocks inhabit spaces that aren’t always active or intended for public use. They are found between gardens, fences and footpaths, behind storage areas, in drains/gutters, car park areas, utility spaces and demolition sites etc. Their confluence with these spaces is a direct result of the systems, behaviours, spatial practices at play in public spaces.

This workshop is an act of exchange with the city and participants, through the group conversation and shared collection of concrete rocks. It aims to activate a renewed awareness of the everyday landscape as a layering of colonial material and ideas, and their impact. The result: a shared anti-monument that speaks to the impact of development and emerging cultural artefacts as a consequence.

  • Through an ongoing walking practice, Gold Coast-based artist Laurie Oxenford has established a practice of engaging with liminal spaces (or “unspaces”) which occur between architecture and infrastructure.

Laurie Oxenford and Grace Dewar are currently undertaking a Platform LAB Residency through their artist cooperative Public Palace. Their practice explores the social, critical and material potentials of public space. Interested in collaboration across spatial practices, Public Palace invites the intersection of ideas via experimental projects and critical discussion.

  • This project is funded by the Regional Arts Development through City of Gold Coast.

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and the City of Gold Coast Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

This project is supported by Platform Arts (Geelong) and GENERATE GC, which is a City of Gold Coast initiative delivered in partnership with Tasdance and SITUATE Art in Festivals.
